In a few days’ time, on Sunday 19th April, we will be clearing overburden from the interior of the pumphouse. To prepare for this a few hours’ of effort were needed to find out how deep we can go without disturbing any features connected to the well. One square metre of the area was carefully uncovered down to the demolition layer. This will allow us to cut back the overlying soil and other post-demolition accumulation using a machine, saving a lot of unproductive and back-breaking work.
We revealed a consistent layer of broken tiles, some brick, a little window glass and significant signs of burning. Now we just hope for good weather on Sunday!
